Chocolate Moose – Outside-In Climbing Gym – Mountain State Miniature Golf

I know, it’s hard to believe, but all three of these surprisingly refreshing businesses are located in one spot on Harper Road in Beckley.

The Chocolate Moose (formerly ‘The Little Brick House’) is a ‘sweet’ treat offering a small, but tasty selection of quality ice cream, custom coffees, custom sodas and fruit smoothies all for reasonable prices.

The atmosphere is both cozy and socially inviting, depending on where you choose to sit. There is a sprawling outdoor wrap-around porch leading to the ‘Mountain State Miniature Golf’ course. There is an upper deck with tables and sun umbrellas. The miniature golf course, by the way, is incredibly charming. It has a ‘WV’ theme, showcasing small versions of some of the State’s best attractions. The course itself is designed to mimic the rugged mountains of our State. It’s challenging, but a fun activity for the family.

The ‘Outside-In Climbing Gym’ is surprisingly spacious with an entire, large climbing vault laced with various climbing and bouldering routes ranging from easy-beginner to advanced.  The very top of the climbing routes have a ‘bell’ to ring, at a dizzying height of about 50′ up.

The folks who imag1165work on belay are friendly and helpful. There are also climbing shoe rentals available. They offer subscriptions with substantial savings for those who plan to come climbing on a regular basis. They always have fun, upbeat music streaming to help keep those energy levels up. Don’t forget to ‘tip’ your belayers!

There are also different rooms inside the main coffee shop to suit different needs. There is a quieter, cozier ‘back room’, with a small couch, a few chairs and a small table. The main front area has a window bar and seating that encourages people to socialize, as well as a large TV screen (usually streaming current news). There are board games available as well, for those who just want to play a game.

Often, you will see students in a study group, enjoying their various beverages or treats while pouring over books.

You can also enjoy live music at the Chocolate Moose. Different bands come in to entertain on a regular basis, as well as a group who shows up to play on Monday evenings.

Only two caveats: I would like to see some type of fresh, but easy food selection offered (other than just snacks and treats) and parking is a little limited, but one can park nearby without much difficulty.

RB loves to enjoy a rootbeer float while taking a break from his climbing and definitely gives this little tucked away spot an enthusiastic ‘thumbs up’!

Brandon’s BBQ & Grille

We visited Brandon’s on a lovely Sunday afternoon as we were leaving the Appalachian South Folklife Center.

We have just spent the weekend camping and we were pretty dirty, tired and of course, very hungry.

We were greeted by pleasant staff who made us feel welcome. I apologized for being disheveled and we were asked if we would feel more comfortable out on the covered deck. I was relieved for the option and was happy to find a comfortable, quasi-outdoor seating area available.

The menus are nicely presented with a focus (not surprisingly) on BBQ, which they make themselves in a huge, outdoor slow cooker.

RB quickly decided that he was most interested in the ‘Kid’s Grilled Cheese’ dinner, but he was concerned that the Grilled Cheese would be tiny. He also ordered the ‘chili fries’ as his side (add $1 for chili). I thought that was a reasonable choice for him and the server was patient with his questions. Since I was also famished, I ordered the pulled pork BBQ sandwich (with slaw), a ‘loaded’ baked potato ($1 extra for the toppings) AND a bowl of the gumbo they were offering that day.

In the meantime, we were given our drinks (lemonaide for RB, sweet iced tea for myself). Our drinks were served cold and refilled promptly, as needed – important since we were thirsty after a camping weekend!

The wait, while not noticeably short, was within a reasonable time frame and we both ‘oohed’ and ‘ahhed’ when our food was brought out. The portions were ‘generous’ (and I’m not a ‘light eater’). RB’s Grilled Cheese was made with Texas Toast, so it was plenty big. The fries were fresh and crisp. The chili, while a bit spicy for the tastebuds of a youngster, was good enough that he ate it anyway.

The Pulled Pork was served on a soft, generic bun but the meat was loaded with smoky flavor. Extra BBQ sauce is provided on the tables, in squeeze bottles, for anyone who wants more. The meat was cooked to perfection with no gristle or fat noticeable. The slaw was typical southern-style slaw, but a tasty compliment to the tangy meat.

The loaded baked potato was perfectly cooked, delicious and filling.

The gumbo was truly something to write home about. That really could have been a meal in itself with a rich, flavorful sauce and chunks of meat and vegetables. It gave the impression that it was made from scratch from the roux to the tidbits of rice. I felt it could have had more ‘heat’, but otherwise it was delicious.

In summary, I would give Brandon’s 5 Stars
RB’s Child Review is a ‘Thumbs Up’.

We look forward to opportunity to eat there again.

China One Buffet

Yesterday, I had the pleasure to visit one of my favorite Chinese buffet restaurants in the area. China One in Sophia, WV has been in operation for many years and I often feel that it is overlooked by most of the Beckley area, due to its location. Tucked into the Mainstreet assortment of businesses, China One might be easily missed by a person who is simply driving by, but if you’re seeking some of the best Chinese food in the area, this is where to find it.

The entrance is humble, but opens into a pleasant dining area with padded booths in the lower level and tables in a raised area near the front window. A large, colorful fish tank with large, curious goldfish captures the attention of children near the front counter.

The prices are very reasonable. Our bill totaled just over $13 for RB and myself during lunch. We each had the buffet. He had lemonade and I had iced water.

Ron Moran at the Piano

The staff are always friendly and Ron Moran is usually standing by to offer a kind word, or play a quick tune on the piano.

The seating is divided into two sections, with a more private seating area available for private parties.

Although the variety of food being offered is what I would consider ‘typical’ Asian fare for a buffet, what they do they do well. The deep fried dishes are always crunchy, hot and fresh tasting. No ‘rancid oil’ flavor that you find with some establishments. The vegetables are cooked lightly, to retain color and a light crunch. The steamed rice is always ready in a covered steam pot on the side of the steam table at just the right texture (not too crunchy, not too mushy).

Cold Side Buffet Table

There is a lovely selection of fresh fruits and vegetables on the ‘cold side’ table.

The two main steam tables stand ready with an assortment of dishes. My one desire for the offerings would be that they offer more in the way of dishes that do not include any sort of breading or coating, but I don’t know that the local customer base would support those choices.

That being said, I am grateful that the restaurant limits the amount of purely ‘american’ foods on the buffet, while still offering a nice variety for picky eaters. Some of the non-Asian foods offered include Mac&Cheese, garlic toast and fried potatoes.

The service was a little ‘lack-luster’, I had to get up and request a refill on my ice water. No one offered to remove our empty plates before we left the table. The restaurant was not overly busy. However, if I had to choose between sterling service at a buffet restaurant and delicious food, I would certainly choose the food. It wasn’t too much of a hassle to walk over and ask for a refill and our table was not overflowing with dirty plates, but some customers might be put off by this slight inconvenience. For me, it just means a slight decrease in tip.

Crunchy Peanut Crusted Chicken

Two of the best dishes they offer, at least in my opinion are the Peanut Crusted Chicken and the Pineapple Shrimp. They were not serving the Pineapple Shrimp this day, but I was able to take advantage of the Peanut Crusted Chicken (obviously not a great choice for anyone with peanut allergies). The chicken is always cooked nicely without being too tough while having that deliciously seasoned, crunchy exterior. I also enjoy the lightly sauteed green beans, which they prepare fresh daily. It’s always nice to see folks sitting nearby, cleaning and snapping the green beans you’re getting ready to eat.

SB’s two favorite dishes are the Broccoli Chicken and the Egg Drop Soup (to which he adds steamed rice). After finishing TWO bowls of soup with rice, he rated the buffet an enthusiastic ‘Thumbs Up!’

Thumbs Up!!
Thumbs Up!

We were not disappointed with our lunch experience and we definitely recommend China One Buffet for any hungry family who wants decent Chinese food in the area. It’s worth the little extra time it takes to drive off the regular beaten path.
