Roma’s Pizza & Grill – East Meets West

The local Beckley crowd has been familiar with Roma’s Pizza for a long time. Traditional Pizzas, Calzones, Italian-style sandwiches, exactly what one would expect from a small pizza place. Having eaten there several times over the last few decades, I never had much of interest to report (but keep reading!) The food was decent, a little pricey, very little room to sit.

Until recently, I hadn’t had much motivation to revisit since ‘Little Cesars’ is much cheaper, and faster, if a person wants to grab a quick pizza to take home. Not long ago, I noticed in passing that the restaurant had closed its doors. Then, something interesting happened.

I saw a friend of mine posting on Facebook about the ‘new Indian restaurant’ in the downtown area of Beckley. Having been a fan of Indian food for some time, I made it a point to find the place and try it out. It turned out, this new place was a re-vamp of the old Roma’s Pizza, with a twist “East Meets West”. Interesting. Facebook PageRomas

Yesterday, I decided to peek in and see what they had to offer. Knowing that my son is picky about his food, I realized that he would likely not be interested in any of the Indian fair, but he was excited at the prospect of a ‘calzone’ (something he had never tried before). I checked the prices and decided to give it a try.

It was dinner time and the place was deserted, but the interior had been remodeled and was cozy and inviting. We chose a booth. The gal at the counter was friendly and helpful, checking to see if everything was available on the chalkboard wall menu (it was) and letting her boss (one of the owners) know that we were in a bit of a time crunch.Roma Interior

My son ordered the Pepperoni Calzone with Sausage, and I ordered a few things to try. I requested the Samosas and the Chicken Biryani, as well as a Mango Lassi.

Our beverages and the Samosas arrived first (Samosas, if you are unfamiliar with them, are deep-fried pouches, usually made from a wheat product, filled with a mix of seasoned vegetables – it is similar to a savory fried pie). The samosas were sizzling, crisp and fresh with a slightly tangy curry sauce dip on the side. My son didn’t care for the samosas, but liked the sauce so much that he kept some to dip his calzone in.IMG_20170601_165936

The salad was ok, but a bit disappointing since it was just the standard iceberg lettuce one would expect from a more common restaurant, plus a few extra veggies and croutons. At least the salad was fresh, nothing was wilted and the flavor of the Greek dressing I chose was perfectly light with the expected citrus / vinegar / oil flavors.IMG_20170601_170347

When our entrees arrived, that was the real game changer. My son squealed with delight at the whopping calzone (I didn’t taste it, but he declared it delicious) and I was impressed with both the generous portion of Chicken Biryani, and the attractive presentation. The flavor didn’t disappoint either. Although there was very little heat (I am a fan of heat), the blend of seasonings was enticing. The dish was served with a sprinkling of fresh cilantro (if you are not a cilantro fan, you can request they leave it off) and sliced red onion with a refreshing riata (a cucumber-yogurt side dish, designed to cool the palate). The rice was perfectly cooked and a lovely golden color, which was a nice visual enhancement of the light curry flavor. The only modest drawbacks were that the chicken was a little dry (but flavorful) and the inclusion of some dried fruits in the dish (possibly apricots? which did still have the pit in them and could cause a problem for people who may not be careful eaters).IMG_20170601_170353

As an added treat, during our meal I had the pleasure of speaking with one of the owners, ‘Sam’ (Samdeep) who is the Chef. It turns out that he has a culinary passion and makes nearly everything from scratch. Even the meats they use are the highest quality, which helps to justify the slightly higher prices you would find in a more common restaurant. Even so, the dishes were worth the price. Sam’s eyes lit up as he shared his love of cooking, creating new flavor combinations and spending hours simmering sauces until they were just right. He even makes his own ice creams, pastas and much more (which I hope to see incorporated into ‘Specials’ for the restaurant at some point). Sam was engaging eager to hear my feedback about the food, both the good points and the suggestions and his brother, Shaan was just as pleasant although I didn’t get as much of an opportunity to chat with him.

They wanted to make sure that folks know they offer more than what is listed on the Chalkboard menu for the ‘Eastern’ food, if you don’t see it, just ask. They are happy to customize orders for those with more delicate needs.

Roma – East Meets West also offers a nice lunch special for just under $9, which includes your choice of entree, lentil soup (not sure if this was more of a daal type dish, I didn’t get to try it) and half a naan. Yum!

If you enjoy something a bit more exotic than most of our local fare, go check them out! I sincerely believe you will not be disappointed and hey, bring the kids along. If they are reluctant to try unusual foods, they still have the standard pizza and american food menu available.

We are definitely planning to go back to this establishment and we hope they have a long, successful run in our downtown Beckley area!

Chocolate Moose – Outside-In Climbing Gym – Mountain State Miniature Golf

I know, it’s hard to believe, but all three of these surprisingly refreshing businesses are located in one spot on Harper Road in Beckley.

Dark Chocolate Mocha with Cinnamon and Cayenne, Dark Chocolate Raspberry Truffle Ice Cream

The Chocolate Moose (formerly ‘The Little Brick House’) is a ‘sweet’ treat offering a small, but tasty selection of quality ice cream, custom coffees, custom sodas and fruit smoothies all for reasonable prices.

The atmosphere is both cozy and socially inviting, depending on where you choose to sit. There is a sprawling outdoor wrap-around porch leading to the ‘Mountain State Miniature Golf’ course. There is an upper deck with tables and sun umbrellas. The miniature golf course, by the way, is incredibly charming. It has a ‘WV’ theme, showcasing small versions of some of the State’s best attractions. The course itself is designed to mimic the rugged mountains of our State. It’s challenging, but a fun activity for the family.

The ‘Outside-In Climbing Gym’ is surprisingly spacious with an entire, large climbing vault laced with various climbing and bouldering routes ranging from easy-beginner to advanced.  The very top of the climbing routes have a ‘bell’ to ring, at a dizzying height of about 50′ up.

The folks who imag1165work on belay are friendly and helpful. There are also climbing shoe rentals available. They offer subscriptions with substantial savings for those who plan to come climbing on a regular basis. They always have fun, upbeat music streaming to help keep those energy levels up. Don’t forget to ‘tip’ your belayers!

There are also different rooms inside the main coffee shop to suit different needs. There is a quieter, cozier ‘back room’, with a small couch, a few chairs and a small table. The main front area has a window bar and seating that encourages people to socialize, as well as a large TV screen (usually streaming current news). There are board games available as well, for those who just want to play a game.

Often, you will see students in a study group, enjoying their various beverages or treats while pouring over books.

You can also enjoy live music at the Chocolate Moose. Different bands come in to entertain on a regular basis, as well as a group who shows up to play on Monday evenings.

Only two caveats: I would like to see some type of fresh, but easy food selection offered (other than just snacks and treats) and parking is a little limited, but one can park nearby without much difficulty.

RB loves to enjoy a rootbeer float while taking a break from his climbing and definitely gives this little tucked away spot an enthusiastic ‘thumbs up’!

Poncho & Lefty’s – Food Without Borders

This past Wednesday, we had dinner at Poncho & Lefty’s on Harper Road in Beckley. We had been hearing about this ‘cool’ new restaurant and we were excited to try it out, but sadly I have to say that we were ‘underwhelmed’ at best.

The parking was extremely limited, with room for maybe five carefully parked cars out front. The eatery (not sure I can call it a restaurant) is the offspring of the local Poncho and Lefty’s taco truck business. In fact, the original ‘taco truck’ is still there, parked inside the garage-type atmosphere of the eatery. The truck has interesting graphics on it. The interior of the eatery has a spartan decor, with two soft drink coolers, a counter and chalk boards on the wall. The menu is a single sheet of paper with no description of the food. There are no prices on the beverages (we figured them to be around $3.50 per can/bottle) and I did not find the beverages to be particularly chilled, straight out of the cooler. There are no cups or ice available. I did not see any straws (for those who prefer to use a straw to drink from a can).

The eatery is promoted with a large sign ‘beer and tacos’. The beer selection is slim. There are also a few varieties of soda, bottled water and one type of hard cider available.

The cashier/waitress was personable and friendly. You pay as you order, before the food arrives. We were charged just under $40 for two adults and one child to eat. This was two fish tacos, one ‘steak’ taco, one order of ‘chicken fajitas’ – which was two small tacos, two orders of fries, two beers (one beer, one cider) and one soda for the kid (that’s a total of three tacos, three drinks and two small ‘fajita’ tacos… for $40). While this might be considered ‘reasonable’ in some areas, it’s very high for this area. Also, do not expect to get a receipt with prices. I asked for a receipt and was given a copy of the order ticket, but no prices were included, only the total handwritten at the top.

After a 20 minute wait (a bit excessive for a few tacos, we thought) we received our food.

The $6 tacos are ‘regular’ sized tacos, served in soft, flour tortillas. While the toppings (red cabbage with vinegar and something like a cucumber sauce) complimented the fish tacos, they did not go so well with the so-called ‘steak’ tacos (which were actually ‘country fried steak’). The fish tacos were deep fried, battered (tiny) fillets. They charge $6 each for tacos and while this might not be excessive for ‘gourmet’ tacos, it hardly seems justified for the quality of food we received.

I have to mention that, although I liked the flavor of the ‘slaw’ topping (cabbage mixed with vinegar), my other guest declared it ‘disgusting’ that ‘red liquid’ poured out of the tacos. He said it reminded him of beet juice (it was the vinegar from the ‘slaw’). A true disadvantage of this excess of liquid was that it caused the flour tortillas to become soggy. Who likes soggy tacos? Not this reviewer.

Poncho & Lefty's Dinner for three
Poncho & Lefty’s Dinner for three

RB ordered the “2 Grilled Chicken Fajitas for $4” – which come wrapped in small, soft corn tortillas (he was not thrilled). In addition, RB specifically asked if he could get the grilled chicken ‘plain’ (no onions or peppers) and was told he could. Of course, the chunks of chicken arrived with tiny bits of grilled onion and pepper all over them, which rendered it inedible for him. Here, I will take a moment to talk about the ‘chicken fajitas’.

The soft corn tortillas were just plain tortillas. Not warmed, not lightly toasted. It would have been nice to offer a choice between flour and corn tortillas, particularly to a child, since it was obvious they had both options. The menu does nothing explain that what it labels ‘chicken fajitas’ are actually small tacos with what can loosely be called ‘fajita chicken’. The chicken was not what one would normally expect from fajita meat. Instead of strips of marinated, seasoned, grilled chicken, this was large chunks of very bland grilled chicken breast. The only seasoning consisted of tiny bits of pepper and onion. The chicken was dry and overcooked on the outside, but I suppose this was to compensate for reviews I’ve read where people have complained of the chicken being raw inside… a result of using large chunks instead of thin strips of meat.

The fries were… ‘special’, and not in a good way. They are mushy, limp and heavily coated in some seasoning mixture which seemed to mostly consist of chili powder and flavorless rosemary. RB declared them ‘awful’ and I’m not far behind that opinion. They are, honestly, the worst excuse for ‘fries’ I’ve ever eaten. RB did manage to eat a few of them, with copious amounts of ketchup, but for the most part, RB was not able to eat dinner with us at this restaurant and ended up complaining, rather loudly, much of the time we were there.

Everything was really bland. I don’t think they use any salt at all (great for someone on a low salt diet?). How fries coated in chili powder can manage to taste bland, I’m really not sure but they have managed to do it. There are no condiments or seasonings available on the tables.

The services was… well, there was no service. Our food was delivered to us on the balcony, but that was about it. No one checked in to ask how things were (they would have gotten an earful) and there was really no option to ‘bus’ your own table. There was not even a garbage can available on the deck, so we had to just leave everything on the table… in the wind… awkward. I can’t even imagine how this place can operate during cold weather unless it’s ‘pick up only’?

The one shining star of the place is the ‘balcony’ seating area up top. It’s refreshing and a pleasant atmosphere, but there are only 5 tables available, up there. I believe there might have been a few small tables downstairs in the parking lot, right next to the cars, but seating is extremely limited.

I’m truly hoping that the establishment can pull together a better ‘recipe’ for their business. I can’t imagine they could have done well in the taco truck with this quality of food and prices, so maybe they were just having an off day. Maybe the pulled pork tacos are much better. Maybe the portabella tacos are delicious, but I’m not willing to risk the expense, indigestion and disappointment to give them another try. In any case, avoid the fries.

RB’s Child Review is a big ‘Thumbs Down’ on this one.

Update: Since the posting of my review, the owner of Poncho & Lefty’s – “Joel Sullivan” has gone on a seriously unprofessional internet tantrum, trying to publicly bash me, saying that I am doing this as a ‘personal attack’, calling me a ‘troll’, trying to send his friends after me, etc. He lied on the original review I posted, saying that they had offered us our money back, when in fact RB was so upset that we didn’t even bother to speak to anyone, we just left. Of course, if anyone had bothered to ‘check on’ us, as they do in most dining establishments, they would have heard everything you read about in this review. It’s truly a shame that someone who is attempting to start a new business appears to be able to handle criticism in a professional manner. While I would have, otherwise, encouraged people to try other items on the menu, this unprofessional, childish, vindictive attitude has done far more to hurt the business than my humble review could have done.

Brandon’s BBQ & Grille

We visited Brandon’s on a lovely Sunday afternoon as we were leaving the Appalachian South Folklife Center.

We have just spent the weekend camping and we were pretty dirty, tired and of course, very hungry.

We were greeted by pleasant staff who made us feel welcome. I apologized for being disheveled and we were asked if we would feel more comfortable out on the covered deck. I was relieved for the option and was happy to find a comfortable, quasi-outdoor seating area available.

The menus are nicely presented with a focus (not surprisingly) on BBQ, which they make themselves in a huge, outdoor slow cooker.

RB quickly decided that he was most interested in the ‘Kid’s Grilled Cheese’ dinner, but he was concerned that the Grilled Cheese would be tiny. He also ordered the ‘chili fries’ as his side (add $1 for chili). I thought that was a reasonable choice for him and the server was patient with his questions. Since I was also famished, I ordered the pulled pork BBQ sandwich (with slaw), a ‘loaded’ baked potato ($1 extra for the toppings) AND a bowl of the gumbo they were offering that day.

In the meantime, we were given our drinks (lemonaide for RB, sweet iced tea for myself). Our drinks were served cold and refilled promptly, as needed – important since we were thirsty after a camping weekend!

The wait, while not noticeably short, was within a reasonable time frame and we both ‘oohed’ and ‘ahhed’ when our food was brought out. The portions were ‘generous’ (and I’m not a ‘light eater’). RB’s Grilled Cheese was made with Texas Toast, so it was plenty big. The fries were fresh and crisp. The chili, while a bit spicy for the tastebuds of a youngster, was good enough that he ate it anyway.

The Pulled Pork was served on a soft, generic bun but the meat was loaded with smoky flavor. Extra BBQ sauce is provided on the tables, in squeeze bottles, for anyone who wants more. The meat was cooked to perfection with no gristle or fat noticeable. The slaw was typical southern-style slaw, but a tasty compliment to the tangy meat.

The loaded baked potato was perfectly cooked, delicious and filling.

The gumbo was truly something to write home about. That really could have been a meal in itself with a rich, flavorful sauce and chunks of meat and vegetables. It gave the impression that it was made from scratch from the roux to the tidbits of rice. I felt it could have had more ‘heat’, but otherwise it was delicious.

China One Buffet

Yesterday, I had the pleasure to visit one of my favorite Chinese buffet restaurants in the area. China One in Sophia, WV has been in operation for many years and I often feel that it is overlooked by most of the Beckley area, due to its location. Tucked into the Mainstreet assortment of businesses, China One might be easily missed by a person who is simply driving by, but if you’re seeking some of the best Chinese food in the area, this is where to find it.

The entrance is humble, but opens into a pleasant dining area with padded booths in the lower level and tables in a raised area near the front window. A large, colorful fish tank with large, curious goldfish captures the attention of children near the front counter.

The prices are very reasonable. Our bill totaled just over $13 for RB and myself during lunch. We each had the buffet. He had lemonade and I had iced water.

Ron Moran at the Piano

The staff are always friendly and Ron Moran is usually standing by to offer a kind word, or play a quick tune on the piano.

The seating is divided into two sections, with a more private seating area available for private parties.

Although the variety of food being offered is what I would consider ‘typical’ Asian fare for a buffet, what they do they do well. The deep fried dishes are always crunchy, hot and fresh tasting. No ‘rancid oil’ flavor that you find with some establishments. The vegetables are cooked lightly, to retain color and a light crunch. The steamed rice is always ready in a covered steam pot on the side of the steam table at just the right texture (not too crunchy, not too mushy).

Cold Side Buffet Table

There is a lovely selection of fresh fruits and vegetables on the ‘cold side’ table.

The two main steam tables stand ready with an assortment of dishes. My one desire for the offerings would be that they offer more in the way of dishes that do not include any sort of breading or coating, but I don’t know that the local customer base would support those choices.

The Fried Food Assortment at China One
The Fried Food Assortment at China One

That being said, I am grateful that the restaurant limits the amount of purely ‘american’ foods on the buffet, while still offering a nice variety for picky eaters. Some of the non-Asian foods offered include Mac&Cheese, garlic toast and fried potatoes.

Sauteed Dishes and other Main Dishes
Sauteed Dishes and other Main Dishes

The service was a little ‘lack-luster’, I had to get up and request a refill on my ice water. No one offered to remove our empty plates before we left the table. The restaurant was not overly busy. However, if I had to choose between sterling service at a buffet restaurant and delicious food, I would certainly choose the food. It wasn’t too much of a hassle to walk over and ask for a refill and our table was not overflowing with dirty plates, but some customers might be put off by this slight inconvenience. For me, it just means a slight decrease in tip.

Crunchy Peanut Crusted Chicken
Crunchy Peanut Crusted Chicken

Two of the best dishes they offer, at least in my opinion are the Peanut Crusted Chicken and the Pineapple Shrimp. They were not serving the Pineapple Shrimp this day, but I was able to take advantage of the Peanut Crusted Chicken (obviously not a great choice for anyone with peanut allergies). The chicken is always cooked nicely without being too tough while having that deliciously seasoned, crunchy exterior. I also enjoy the lightly sauteed green beans, which they prepare fresh daily. It’s always nice to see folks sitting nearby, cleaning and snapping the green beans you’re getting ready to eat.

SB’s two favorite dishes are the Broccoli Chicken and the Egg Drop Soup (to which he adds steamed rice). After finishing TWO bowls of soup with rice, he rated the buffet an enthusiastic ‘Thumbs Up!’

Thumbs Up!!
Thumbs Up!

We were not disappointed with our lunch experience and we definitely recommend China One Buffet for any hungry family who wants decent Chinese food in the area. It’s worth the little extra time it takes to drive off the regular beaten path.
